Opening Your Mind To New Ideas

In today’s world it is imperative that we continuously recalibrate. Susan Spaulding, principal of Recalibrate Strategies and Q-FI Solutions guest blogger, provides practical ways to embed recalibrating into your culture and uncover new possibilities.

In the business world, one of your worst enemies is complacency. It is so easy to become comfortable with the same old ways of doing things. Such a mentality is dangerous to the forward progression of your business. If your mind is not open to new ways of doing things and to new product ideas, then your dinosaur business methods will lead to the extinction of your company.

In order to succeed in the competitive and ever changing business landscape, it may be necessary to recalibrate your approach. The first step in recalibrating is the opening your mind up to new ideas. As a mental warm-up, let us take a common object, such as the paper clip. At a work session that I recently conducted, I took a paper clip and asked the group to write down new uses for the paper clip. Here are some examples of what resulted from this quick brainstorm session:

  • Eject CD's out of a computer
  • Earrings
  • Emergency eye glass screw
  • Fork
  • Toothpick
  • Reset router
  • Ornament hangar
  • Picture hangar
  • Hole puncher
  • Draw in dirt
  • Slingshot
  • Doll house fence
  • Close a chip bag
  • Pry out a staple
  • As a hair tie
  • To hold cords on desk
  • To clean a crevice
  • A fish hook
  • A shoe lace
  • A link for a broken dog collar
  • As a bag tie
  • As a letter opener
  • As a toothpick
  • To hold a seam together

This mental exercise emphasizes a powerful point. On the surface, someone can look at a simple paper clip and just see a paper clip. Their minds can be disrupted by the thought that a paper clip's sole purpose is to hold paper. Such mental disruption can be a catalyst in developing new product ideas. Once you can open your mind up and develop the ability to see beyond the surface, new ideas start pouring in.

Once you can recalibrate your current business approach, it will help you to find new ways to market your company. Even with old products, you can rebrand and present them in new and fresh ways. In a sense, even old products can become the basis for new product ideas.

You can stick with a dinosaur business model. We all know what happened to the dinosaurs. The other choice is to open your mind to new ideas. Through this recalibration, your company will successfully continue to evolve.
